Share Your Story

Everyone seems to have a story about the "yellow pie plates" from their own family. We can continue to learn about families and inheritance by listening to the experiences of families, including yours.

Please tell us more! What experiences have you had with the transfer of personal possessions? How did you and others make decisions? Were there particular objects that were the source of disagreements?

The stories and responses you provide here will be treated confidentially. This means if we decide to share your story with others, we will change the names and personal details to protect your family identity. Your story will be sent to the project team's email and read by team members.

Your story may be used to help develop additional educational resources and to help us learn more about inheritance decisions.

If you have any questions about how your story might be used, please contact us at mstum@umn.edu.

Please choose one or both of the options below.

Option 1: Share your experience with personal property distribution and inheritance using your own words.

Option 2: Share your experiences with "fairness" issues by answering the following questions.

  • What would you consider to be a "fair" personal property inheritance?

  • Have any family member(s) felt decisions about personal property transfers were unfair? If so, what made it feel unfair?

  • How were conflicts managed or resolved?

  • What rules have been or will be used to decide "who gets what" in your family?

  • What rules have been or will be used to decide the process of making inheritance decisions?
